Open Access funding for FWF projects
From January 1, 2024, FWF Open Access funding will be processed directly by the MedUni Vienna University Library:
- the FWF's "Refereed Publications" program will be discontinued at the end of 2023. Instead, the "Open Access Block Grant" will come into force.
- This "Open Access Block Grant" is paid out annually by the FWF to the research institutions. OA publications resulting from an FWF project will then be funded directly by the universities.
Even though the funding of OA publications of the FWF will be handled by the Open Access Team of the Medical University of Vienna from 2024, the FWF's funding conditions will continue to apply!
A detailed description of all FWF requirements can be found here: FWF Open Access Policy for peer-reviewed publications.

The following passage must be included in all publications at submission (insertion after acceptance is void):
This research was funded in whole or in part by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) [grant DOI]. For open access purposes, the author has applied a CC BY public copyright license to any author accepted manuscript version arising from this submission.

Workflow for journals included in an OA publishing agreement
Funding process for journals included in an OA publishing agreement with Medical University of Vienna: no OA funding application is necessary in this case (publishers should recognise eligible authors and proactively offer OA at no charge). Please check our website for detailed OA funding requirements in connection with particular OA publishing agreements.
Workflow for journals not included in an OA publishing agreement
To apply for funding, please fill out our online application form (only for members of the Medical University of Vienna).
The application form is only active from 1.1.2024!
1. The Team Open Access reviews the application and informs you whether or not the charges can be covered. In case of a positive answer we will provide you with the Team Open Access postal address the publisher makes out the invoice to.
2. You forward the invoice address to the publisher.
3. The publisher sends the invoice to the Open Access Office.
(In case the publisher is only able to invoice the author directly, please forward it to us so we can pay it. Note: Billing address must include institute/center and Medical University of Vienna)
Never pay the invoice on your own! Invoices that have already been paid cannot be refunded.
Please note that only OA publication charges can be accepted. This means that the invoice must not include any other types of charges (e.g. page charges, color charges, cover charges).
4. The Open Access Office covers the charges and informs you about this. After publication the Team Open Access archives your article in MedUni Wien ePub, the repository of the MedUni Vienna.
When do I apply for funding?
This application should ideally be submitted prior to submission. The last opportunity is at the time of invoicing (no reimbursements!).
If you are still in the early stages of writing an article and just want to know whether or not we can cover the charges for articles in a specific journal, please enquire at oa_ub(at)meduniwien.ac.at and include the journal title and the publisher's name.
