F.C. Blodi, M.D. (1917-1996)  <\/strong><\/p>\n

Geboren in Wien und aufgewachsen in M\u00f6dling \u2013 unweit von Wien, dort, wo er seine geliebte Otti kennenlernte. Das Studium, Promotion und Vorklinik (Schwerpunkt Pathologie), sowie die fach\u00e4rztliche Ausbildung, an der Ersten Univ.-Augenklinik absolvierte er in Wien. Im Rahmen eines Stipendiums der WHO lernte er an der Columbia, Labor Prof. L. von Sallmann, Harkness Eye Institute, NYC, E. Braley kennen. Bald darauf lud ihn Braley, mit dem er sich pr\u00e4chtig verstand, nach Iowa ein, damit er als ophthalmologischer Pathologe das Iowa Eye-Department – im wahrsten Sinn des Wortes – bereicherte.<\/p>\n

\u201eFred Blodi became an associate professor in 1961, professor in 1965, and head of the department in 1967. During the years of Dr. Blodi’s leadership (1967-1984), the Department of Ophthalmology’s reputation was enhanced as one of the very best places in the world to learn ophthalmology. Dr. Blodi has been the ideal academic physician. He was a scholar – a recognized expert in ophthalmic pathology, a skilled diagnostician and an accomplished surgeon, an administrator whose decision-making seems effortless, a devoted and thoughtful editor, and an indefatigable translator of medical books – but above all he was a teacher. As his former students will remember, he loved to teach He bubbled over with humor, but never strayed from the point of his lecture. Faculty meetings were short (!)\u201c  S. Thompson (1)<\/p>\n

Er bleibt lebendig als begnadeter akademischer Lehrer in Erinnerung und – Unvergesslich sind seine ‚Pathology Teaching Conferences‘, humorvoll und geradezu unterhaltsam: Die rascheste richtige Antwort eines Residents wurde jeweils mit einem ’six pack case‘ belohnt – und Faculty Meetings zeichneten sich nicht nur durch bestechende K\u00fcrze aus. Ein ‚Problem‘ wurde aufgezeigt, doch niemals zerpfl\u00fcckt oder langatmig zerredet, sondern war meist bei der n\u00e4chsten Sitzung behoben. Ein Paradies f\u00fcr Kummer gew\u00f6hnte klinische Opthalmologen (- ‚from abroad‘). Seine Outdoor-Tennis Matches waren legend\u00e4r, gleichg\u00fcltig, ob die gnadenlose Midwest-Sonne den Asphalt zum Gl\u00fchen brachte oder ob es zu schneien begann – alte ‚Iowa-Tradition‘. <\/p>\n

\u201eHe authored more than 200 original papers, contributed to more than 30 books, and provided English-speaking audiences access to more than 40<\/p>\n

volumes published originally in German. His translation of Hirschberg’s History of Ophthalmology was a monumental achievement. He was the first President of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (1979) after it had parted company with Otolaryngology, served as President of the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology (AUPO) and the American Ophthalmological Society, was chairman of the American Board of Ophthalmology, and was Editor-in-Chief of the Archives of Ophthalmology. He delivered both the Jackson Lecture and the Verhoeff Lecture (American Ophthalmological Society), and received the Gold Medal Favarola from the Italian Ophthalmological Society, the Howe medal from the American Ophthalmological Society, and the Cross of Honor for Science and Art, First Class, from the Federal Republic of Austria.         <\/p>\n

He was the embodiment of Old World graciousness. In the clinic, he would begin an examination by asking patients about their children (by name), their favorite pet, or their hobby. He had the perfect joke for every occasion. His patients loved him.\u201c   Robert Folberg, M.D.  (2)<\/p>\n

Blodi konnte im Jahre 1940 nur unter Auflage eines Berufsverbots promovieren. Er half Soldaten, die in den letzten Kriegsmonaten den Fronteinsatz verweigerten um dem sinnlosen Endkampf des NS-Regimes zu entkommen. Blodi wurde verraten, verurteilt und inhaftiert, \u00fcberlebte aber und emigrierte nach 1945 in die USA und wurde ein bedeutender Augenchirurg. Seit 2009 erinnert die Universit\u00e4t an ihn (3).<\/p>\n

Die Kinder, Barbara Blodi, MD und Christopher F. Blodi, MD sind beide erfolgreich in der Ophthalmologie ‚unterwegs‘. (4,5).<\/p>\n

Epilog:<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/strong>Dieser Text ist keine verkl\u00e4rte Erinnerung an eine ‚Lichtgestalt‘. Er enth\u00e4lt weder \u00dcbertreibung noch Euphemismen. Fred Blodi, aber auch der oben zitierte – ebenso emigrierte Ludwig von Sallmann*(6), der in seinem fernen ’neuen‘ zu Hause das selige Alt\u00f6sterreich auferstehen lie\u00df, waren unerreichte Vorbilder – hoffentlich nicht die letzten.  <\/p>\n
