Nach der Reifepr\u00fcfung am Staatsgymnasium im Jahre 1907 studierte er Humanmedizin an der Universit\u00e4t Wien und promovierte am 13.03.1913 zum Doktor der gesamten Heilkunde. Bereits w\u00e4hrend des Studiums arbeitete er 1911\u20131913 als Demonstrator am I. Anatomischen Institut unter Prof. Julius Tandler, und er blieb diesem Fachgebiet zeitlebens treu. Nach Beendigung des Studiums entschied sich Harry Sicher, den weiteren Weg als Zahnmediziner zu gehen. Die Jahre als Assistent am zahn\u00e4rztlichen Institut 1914 bis 1920 wurden durch 3 Jahre Kriegsdienst als Milit\u00e4rarzt unterbrochen. Im Jahr 1920 wurde Harry Sicher zum Privatdozenten f\u00fcr Zahnheilkunde ernannt, 1933 zum a. o. Professor. Aufgrund der politischen Umst\u00e4nde wurde er im M\u00e4rz 1938 entlassen. Nachdem er in Gro\u00dfbritannien keine Zulassung als praktizierender Zahnarzt bekam, fand er ab Juni 1939 eine Anstellung als Assistenzprofessor f\u00fcr Neuroanatomie an der Chicago Medical School. Ab 1942 wurde er Vorstand des Instituts f\u00fcr Anatomie und Histologie an der Loyola University School of Dentistry Chicago, wo er 1960 emeritierte.<br \/>\nHarry Sicher publizierte im Laufe seiner Karriere von 1911 bis 1970 weltweit etwa 145 wissenschaftliche Artikel in renommierten Fachzeitschriften, in denen er alle Fachrichtungen der Zahnheilkunde behandelte. Dazu kommen noch 6 Lehrb\u00fccher, 4 in Deutsch und 2 in Englisch, ein Buchbeitrag in einem Lehrbuch f\u00fcr Zahnheilkunde, und ein Lehrbuch, welches er nach dem Tod seines Kollegen Balint Orban (1960) in der 5. Auflage herausgegeben hat. Sein Werk \u201eOral anatomy\u201c wurde in 4 Sprachen herausgegeben und wurde f\u00fcr viele Jahrzehnte DAS Standardlehrbuch f\u00fcr Anatomie f\u00fcr Zahnmedizinstudenten in vielen L\u00e4ndern, es erschien 1988 bereits in 8. Auflage. Durch zahlreiche Entwicklungsstudien von Knochen und Kiefer erlangte Sicher gro\u00dfe Ehre unter Kieferorthop\u00e4den.<br \/>\nHarry Sicher starb 85-j\u00e4hrig am 09.12.1974 in Chicago. Er hinterlie\u00df seine zweite Ehefrau, aber keine Kinder.<\/em>Kurzfassung englisch<br \/>\nHarry Sicher was born in Vienna, Austria on 11th September 1889.<br \/>\nHe studied medicine and received his medical degree from the Vienna University Medical School in 1913. During his studies he worked under Prof. Julius Tandler in the department of applied anatomy, where he received a broad and solid training in all aspects of anatomy. After graduation from medical school, Sicher decided to specialize in dentistry. He worked from 1914 \u2013 1920 in clinical practice, research and teaching in the Dental Department of the Vienna University Medical School. During the First World War he served for 3 years in the medical corps of the Austrian army. In the year 1920 Sicher habilitated to an assistant professor. As a result of the political circumstances after Hitler annexed Austria in March 1938 Sicher was dismissed as university teacher. He tried to obtain a job in Great Britain, but the General Medical Council did not allow Austrian dentists to practice in the UK. In June 1939 Sicher found employment as associate professor of Neuroanatomy at the Chicago Medical School. In 1942 Sicher joined the Loyola University School of Dentistry.<br \/>\nHe served as professor and head of the department of anatomy and histology until his retirement in 1960. Harry Sicher published between 1911 and 1970 about 145 scientific articles world wide in several renowned journals. The topics covered by his publications were ranged widely. He also wrote 6 textbooks, 4 in German and 2 in English. His textbook \u201cOral anatomy\u201d, first edition in 1949, was edited in 4 languages (German, English, Spanish and Chinese) and became the standard textbook for dental schools throughout the world for many years. His research and publishing in the area of bone metabolism made him especially popular with orthodontic and oral surgery groups and his work in dental education and research earned him worldwide professional recognition and academic honour. Harry Sicher died on December 9th, 1974 at the age of 85. He was survived by his second wife. As a particular example, the University of Vienna&#8217;s dental program lost almost three-quarters of their faculty in 1938 when Hitler&#8217;s forces occupied the city. Foremost among this group were Bernhard Gottlieb and his students, Balint Orban, Rudolf Kronfeld, Joseph Weinmann, and Harry Sicher. Prominent names include Bernhard Gottlieb and his students, Balint Orban, Rudolf Kronfeld, Joseph Weinmann, and Harry Sicher. It is impossible to imagine what shape the field of periodontology would have today without the contributions of these and other leading Jewish dentists. Most of Gottlieb\u2019s students emigrated to the United States around 1938 when Hitler&#8217;s forces took Vienna and required the departure of Jewish faculty from the University there. You may notice this list includes some of the founders of the field of Periodontology (Balint &amp; Orban, in particular).
